SIMPLY FOUR-SOME!
For the second time in a week Peterborough United's Under 18s were firmly put to the sword by a rampant Rangers side that have now scored ten times in their three outings against the Posh this season.
Hot on the heels of their 5-1 victory in the semi-final of the Puma Youth Alliance League Cup at London Road six days earlier, Steve Brown's side consolidated their position at the top of the Puma Youth Alliance League with a resounding 4-0 victory at Harlington on Saturday morning.
Brown's side showed just one change from the Cup victory, with Josh Parker replacing Romone Rose up front. Brown also named 16 year-old Danny Fernandez and 14 year-old Frankie Sutherland on the R's substitutes' bench.
Brown had warned his players prior to kick-off that it was never going to be easy playing Peterborough for the second time in a week, especially having already won the first encounter so convincingly.
"I told the lads that revenge is the biggest motivator in football and the Peterborough players would be out to show us that they were better than their first performance suggested," said Brown.
"They would have more determination and undoubtedly would be first out of the blocks when the game started. We had to be ready for that and play every it as well as we had done in the first game, if not better, in order to get the right result."
Brown's words, although taken on board by his side, proved to be correct as the visitors started the match on the front foot immediately and Rangers were forced to defend early on.
However, on 26 minutes the R's were awarded a fortuitous penalty when a Posh defender was adjudged to have handled a shot at close range. Billy Coyne duly stepped up to send the visiting keeper the wrong way and give Brown's side the lead.
Going behind sparked more life into the visitors play and Rangers were again forced to defend in numbers as Posh pressed hard for an equaliser.
Despite all their efforts though it was Rangers who grabbed a second on the stroke of half-time, when a well worked short corner between Coyne and Chris Arthur resulted in the latter's cross being glanced in by Josh Parker.
Rangers now began to assert their superiority on the game and Brown took the opportunity to introduce young striker Fernandez on the hour mark for his second appearance of the season. Ten minutes later, Rangers found themselves three up, with Arthur again the provider.
This time the midfielder's long cross was headed back across goal by Parker for Josh Ford to crouch low and head in at the opposite post.
The R's sealed the victory in the final minute of normal time, when Parker was sent crashing to ground in the box and, with regular spot-kick taker Coyne off the pitch, the same player picked himself up, dusted himself down and tucked home his seventh goal of the season.
Brown reflected afterwards on a successful week for his young team, commenting: "Some of the lads have played three 90 minutes this week and it's been hard for them, so I'm very pleased.
"Peterborough made it very hard for us; they obviously did their home work after the Cup match and decided to match us up which was an unfamiliar challenge for our lads, as not many teams play the same way as us."
Brown continued: "Once we got to grips with the challenge and I felt we were in control and it gave me the chance to give Danny and Frankie a run out.
"Frankie is an exciting prospect who Keith (Ryan) and I have been watching closely for some time now. He's already been in training with the Under-16's and we saw this as an opportunity to see how he would cope with 20 minutes or so with the 18's.
"All in all we've had a very good week; the Cup win, with the lads playing at London Road under the lights with a fair sized crowd there; a good work out for some of them in the Reserves on Wednesday; and this league victory which keeps us well placed at the top of the league.
"We've also made all the Scholarship decisions for next season and Keith and I are already looking forward to working with this new group of players to see how much we can achieve with them. Then, on Saturday afternoon Angelo pops up with his first goal for the first team which gave all his youth team mates in the stand watching a real buzz."
