DOMINANT DISPLAY DESPITE DEFEAT
Rangers made the long journey to Plymouth in search of their first win of the season, but were again denied any points due to poor finishing in a game which they all but dominated from start to finish.
The hosts were hanging on for dear life for the majority of the game and were clearly relieved as well as being amazed that they had come away with all three points once the final whistle had blown.
Rangers set their stall out early and ensured that they stamped their authority on the game whilst displaying some great passing and movement throughout the side.
A Rangers corner after five minutes was met by the head of Lucy Dewar at the near postbut she failed to make good contact with the ball.
The R's continued to press and created numerous goal scoring chances but failed to show the necessary composure required in front of goal to capitalise.
In the 30th minute and totally against the run of play Plymouth went ahead through what was to be the only goal of the game, after a mix up in Rangers defence resulted in no one taking responsibility for dealing with a cross from the left and the Plymouth striker was left totally unmarked to head home at the far post.
UndeterredRangers were again immediately on the attack again with a Danielle Richards Effort being turned round the post by the home keeper.
Rangers best chance came four minutes before the break when Ahearne was through inside the box but fired her shot over the bar.
The second half was non stop pressure from Rangers with Lucy Dewar dominant in the centre of midfield, as well as the back four putting in a superb collective performance.
With 60 minutes gone Danielle Richards sent in a great cross from the right which Dewar took on the volley, only for her effort to go agonisingly over the bar. This was followed by a very dubious offside decision given against Ahearne when she found herself clean through with only the keeper to beat.
Plymouth were now playing very deep and had pulled an extra player back to help cope with the constant pressure they were under. In the 75th minute Ahearne put Caroline Pennifold through on goal just inside the box but again with only the keeper to beat she rushed her shot and sliced the ball wide.
Rangers knew it was not going to be their day when in the 80th minute Simone Dwyer put Ahearne through, she drew the keeper went past her then placed her shot, only to see it come back off the inside of the post before being cleared to safety by a defender.
Rangers were still not done and in the 85th minute Ahearne once again found herself clean through only to be foiled this time by a last ditch tackle just as she was about to slot the ball home. The R's last effort came in the 87th minute after a neat one two between Richards and Treanor say the latter lay a lovely through ball to ahearne whos' shot was saved by the keeper.
Manager Martino Chevannes said " I cant fault my players performance today, they showed great determination and character and were by far the better side, outplaying the league leaders for the majority of the game."
"This was a big improvement on our two previous performances and the players showed exactly what we should be doing week in week out. We still need to get things right in front of goal, its no use us creating the amount of chances that we do every week with nothing to show for it."
But now at least the players have responded in a positive way to the criticism of the two previous matches and as such it gives us something to build on, I am still hopeful of bringing in a few new faces very soon to bolster the squad."
