QPR secured the free transfer signing of Chris Barker in the summer of 2007, after the defender was released by Cardiff City.

Barker, who spent last season on loan at Championship newcomers Colchester United from Cardiff City, was widely expected to join the U's on a permanent deal in the summer, but John Gregory jumped to the front of the queue and duly made him his first signing of the summer at the start of June.

Barker made 39 appearances in all competitions whilst on loan at Layer Road last season, and was widely regarded as the U's most consistent performer throughout the campaign.

Career

The Sheffield born defender began his career at non-league outfit Alfreton, before Barnsley snapped him up in 1999.

Barker spent three seasons at Oakwell, before Cardiff paid £600,000 for his services in 2002.

He went on to make 150-plus appearances for the Bluebirds, before falling out of favour under current Cardiff boss Dave Jones.
